BENEDICTINE NUNS of St. Emma’s Monastery & Retreat House announce a special overnight retreat for Busy Moms (and Grandmas), August 20/21. The Retreat master is the Rev. Angelus Shaughnessy, OFMCap. The Retreat includes Eucharistic adoration, opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, conferences and daily Mass. Cost is $75.

ANNUAL APPEAL for the Church in Poland or “Liga Katolicka” is getting underway. All proceeds will aid flooded churches and help to educate Polish Priests abroad. Your support is greatly appreciated. A CELEBRATION  honoring “Our Lady of Czestochowa,  patroness of Poland and Polish-Americans, will take place on Thursday, August 26th at 7:00 pm, at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Pittsburgh. The Most Reverend David Zubik, Bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, will be the main celebrant and homilist. This celebration is sponsored by the Polish Falcons of America and the Polish Clergy of the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Using brain scans, an international team of scientists has taken a look inside the brains of patients diagnosed as being in a ‘vegetative state’. These patients, the images clearly showed, were living silently – their minds apparently active. The scans showed brain activity like that in any healthy conscious person. (New York Times, 2/4/10) This contradicts the arguments that such patients are ‘in a vegetative state’, and can be starved to death as Terry Schiavo was in 2005.
